Expert French Drain Installation
Water always pools at the lowest point it can. In most Carolina homes, that’s the crawl space or the area right outside the foundation, which are also two of the worst places for water to collect. Out in the yard, pooling water turns usable space into a muddy mess that takes days to dry. A French drain redirects this water elsewhere.
Moisture Loc has installed French drains across the Carolinas for decades. We know how this region’s clay soil, frequent storms, and older homes interact, and we build French drain systems that hold up to all three.
French drain details to know:
- Redirects water away from your crawl space and foundation
- Helps yard drainage and prevents puddling
- Protects against puddling, moisture damage, and mold
- Serves as a key component of crawl space waterproofing

Redirect Water Where You Want it to Go
A free inspection is the fastest way to see if a French drain is the right fix for your home or yard.
What is a French Drain?
A French drain starts with a trench that our technicians dig around the perimeter of your crawl space or outside your foundation. They then place a perforated pipe in the trench and cover it with stone. Typically, we connect the trench to a sump pump, which collects the water and pumps it safely away from your house or trouble areas in your yard. A properly installed French drain can and should last decades.
Without a French drain, pooling water can:
- Create an ideal environment for mold growth
- Cause wooden joists and beams to rot
- Create musty smells that permeate your home
- Damage your yard or render parts of it unusable
- Create havens for termites and other infestations
Whether it’s part of a larger crawl space waterproofing project or installed to protect your lawn and yard, a French drain can be a long-term lifesaver for your home. Learn more in our guide to French drain systems.

Where French Drains Work Best
French drains work both inside and outside your home.
Crawl Space Waterproofing
When Moisture Loc waterproofs a crawl space, French drains can play an integral part. The purpose of the French drain is to redirect water before it can pool on the ground or soak into wood and insulation.

Foundation Protection
An exterior French drain runs along the outside of your home’s foundation, pulling water away. Foundation damage is one of the most expensive repairs a homeowner has, and a properly placed French drain is one of the most affordable ways to prevent it.
Low Spots in the Yard
A French drain can route standing water in your yard to a safe expulsion area. Learn more on our Yard Drainage Solutions page.
Signs You May Need a French Drain
- Puddles along your foundation after it rains
- Puddling, dampness, or wet spots in your crawl space
- Visible mold
- Musty odors coming from below the house
